First mentioned in the 6th century, the village of Verchers Layon is part of the District of Doué la Fontaine. Its geographical location also places it on the borders of the region of Deux Sevres and near the district of Vihiers. Covering 3070 acres, Les Verchers is quite distinctive as on the outskirts of the village, there are fifteen hamlets that can be considered as real villages being on average 3 to 4 kilometres apart. The community was created in 1818 after a meeting of the different parishes in the region.

The Verchers sur Layon has an average altitude of 60 metres with two notable uneven areas which facilitate the planting of grapevines. The Layon River meanders between the trees, through the flat and fertile valley to the town. The Community has created two small lakes where fishing and leisure activities are available. The community of Verchers boasts a rich architectural heritage of chateaux, prestige houses, magnificent caves, dove cotes ......
