Founded by the monks of Saint Florent, this wine-growing town has two main activities: firstly, the development of nurseries (trees and roses), and secondly, the production of local products through direct sales: wine, meat beef, foie gras, goats cheese, organic gardening ... Amongst the architectural curiosities are the 19th century  Church, Châtelaison manor, the Priory, the Chateau de Mines and Fougerolle. A footpath, (created by the association "Terres Noires (Black Earth)" and the district of Concourson-sur-Layon), offers to the curious, a way to discover the traces of mining activity in the area.

The vitality of the town is supported by many associations (leisure and cultural). In addition, a primary school of four classes (nursery, canteen and a Local Educational Contract offering multiple activities for children) provides for the youth of Saint Georges sur Layon. In the village, the shops are very active: a grocery and a butcher. Since 2000, a campsite offering the rental of chalets and several farmhouses (gîtes) has attracted many tourists from all regions of France.
